12-String Guitar — 12-String Drawings from the Acoustic Forest — An entire CD dedicated to the 12-String Guitar influenced by John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Peter Lang & Jorma Kaukonen.
Wisdom of the Wood — 12-String Guitar — Drawings from the Acoustic Forest
by Mickey Cochran
The CD is completely dedicated to the 12-String Acoustic Steel String guitar ... Mickey has studied, since his High School days in Santa Fe, an idiom of guitar that has been mostly pursued by underground folk guitarists called: “American Primitive Guitar”. First introduced and labeled by John Fahey in the late ‘50s, American Primitivism parallels the visual arts of the same name in that it is pure americana and has homegrown roots as opposed to established art forms that have parameters set from years of provincial rules. Mickey states, “This approach to guitar is largely free form and is characterized by non-standard tunings as played on the medium of steel string acoustic guitar”. Other exponents of this style include: Leo Kottke, Peter Lang, Jorma Kaukonen and Stefan Grossman.

Acoustic Steel String Guitar, both 6 & 12-string, offers a tonal quality that is as pure and natural as the forest itself. Mickey has been a long-time proponent of acoustic music. “Acoustic music has the mystical ability to bring one closer to the earth; today, it seems, we’re surrounding and insulating ourselves in a synthetic, electronic world. All natural acoustic music, without artificial ingredients, reflects his sovereign spirit of living in the wondrous New Mexico wilderness. “’Drawings from the Acoustic Forest’ is a testament to rediscovering our natural surroundings through the vibrations of wood and steel.”
Heavily influenced by John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Peter Lang and Jorma Kaukonen, Mickey Cochran has compiled renderings encompassing originals, covers and 12-String Guitar interpretations. He "draws" a landscape with wood and steel continuing to prove that the 12-String Guitar is a powerful force. The songs throughout this CD were composed and recorded on an exquisitely made Breedlove 12-String Guitar (Model SC20/R); Mickey has been playing Breedlove Mandolins and Guitars for over 10 years now. Having been somewhat an underground instrument and mainly given tribute by American Primitive Guitar artists, although used to good effect in classic rock, today 12-String Guitar renderings are difficult to find. Mickey is proving once again that the 12-String Guitar deserves recognition for its driving force, crystal clear acoustic voice with an orchestral quality unmatched as a solo instrument.
